Често задавани въпроси

How Do I Pay My Tax?

You pay the taxes yourself; I do not operate (or have any access) with your funds. I will apply for a Personal Identification Code issued by the NRA. With that code, you have personal access to your NRA account where the due amounts can be checked and paid with a bank card very easily and safely. With this access, you have control of what I am doing on your behalf as you can check all the declarations I submit for you.

Can I Pay My Taxes with a Card Issued by a Foreign Bank?

Yes.

What Diploma or Certificate Do I Need for the Registry Agency?

Anything that consists of: 1. The title "Diploma" or "Certificate." 2. Your full names. 3. The authority that issued it. 4. Some qualification or profession. should be good enough. By law, such a document is needed but practically no one will go into detail reading it.

Do I Need to Have a Bulgarian Bank Account?

No. You can receive your income in any bank jurisdiction you like. As long as you declare and pay your tax in Bulgaria, the NRA is fine with that. Alternatives like PayPal, Stripe, Revolut, Wise, and foreign bank accounts are allowed

Do I Need to Have a Separate Bank Account for My Income?

No. You can use one bank account for your income and expenses. However, if you have many various expenses, it may be more convenient to keep a separate account for incoming and outgoing funds. For security reasons, separate accounts are also recommended but not mandatory.

Can I Register as a "Sole Trader" Instead of a "Freelancer"?

The term "sole trader" is commonly used in UK legislation and practically means a "freelancer." In Bulgaria, a sole trader is a specific and different legal entity. It is an individual with some company accounting requirements (the accounting is more or less the same as for a company). Practically, it is the most expensive option as you will pay taxes as a company (15%) plus social insurance at the maximum rate.

Which Is a Better/Cheaper Option: Freelancer or Company?

Depending on the income.

I travel a lot, sort of a part-time digital nomad. I might not spend 183 days in Bulgaria. Do you see this as problematic?

No, as long as you pay your taxes in Bulgaria, the authorities are not concerned about whether you spend 183 days in the country. However, this may not apply to other countries and authorities where you reside.

Are there any other costs, one-time, monthly, or yearly?

No additional administrative costs. You will pay monthly, quarterly, and annual taxes and social insurance based on your income, plus my fee. That's all.

How much time does it take to receive the Bulgarian VAT ID? Should I start invoicing without it and then you can request it?

The VAT ID will be issued within 14 days from applying. VAT registration can begin as soon as you are registered in the Registry Agency (or upon registering a company). If you provide services to EU VAT-registered companies, you must register for VAT before providing the service.

Do I charge VAT on the invoice I send to my client’s companies (B2B)?

No, you will issue invoices with a 0% VAT rate. If the client is EU-based (including the UK), they will use the "reverse charge of VAT." This does not apply to services provided to individual clients (B2C).

How do we manage accounting? What do I need to provide you as information?

You should send me monthly (by email): • Bank statements • Invoices you send to your clients • Expense invoices (if operating as a company). Note that many personal expenses, such as rent, food, and restaurants, are not tax-deductible. We can discuss this further.

Do I need to do something personally, visit authorities' offices, or other places?

Apart from the activities required for initial registration, no. All tax and registration processes are digital (except for the Migration Office registration).

Can I refund VAT for expenses?

Yes, the VAT on any expenses directly related to the freelancer or company activity can be refunded. Since freelancer or company invoices are at 0% VAT, the VAT paid for expenses should be refunded to a bank account. This can be done monthly, quarterly, or annually. Any cash refund is subject to a tax check (or "revision") by NRA employees, which can take between one to six months, depending on transactions. The monthly accountancy fee does not include this activity; it is paid separately at 100 EUR per check or revision (if required).

What expenses can I claim?

Expenses can be claimed by companies only. Freelancers use a fixed 25% rate of recognized expenses. For IT service providers, expenses can include mobile/internet services, office equipment, accounting/legal services, office rent, and more. Personal expenses such as food, restaurants, clothing, travel, residential property rent, and car expenses (including depreciation) cannot be claimed. There is no approved or banned list of expenses; NRA employees will decide what can be accepted.

Can I work as an employee and freelancer?

Yes. Your employer will pay social insurance on the actual salary you receive (but not more than 3,750 BGN per month). As a freelancer, you will pay social insurances on the difference between your salary and 3,750 BGN. If your salary is 3,750 BGN or more, you will only pay the tax on your income, not social insurance.
